Passionate Politics

I was so pleased when Fox News’s Neil Cavuto invited me on his show to discuss the public debate over health care reform. As a nurse, I understand how passionate people become when it comes to their health and the health of their families. And while I think free speech is vitally important to the discussion, I do feel that manners are essential so that both sides have a chance to make their case without the distraction of intolerance. Here are my suggestions:
  • Don’t interrupt people while they are speaking; give others a chance to express their opinions.
  • Keep an open mind and listen to what people have to say.
  • Don’t be judgmental, when you judge you are not listening.
  • Respect people’s opinions the way you would like them to respect yours.
Below is a link to my appearance on Neil’s show.

Enjoy!

Dear Countess: If people followed your advice, we'd have a lot more civilized debate. (And maybe even progress) Great advice!
